In what sources are describing as one of the more chaotic arrests in recent GTA Police Department memory, officers moved on the home of Agnes Ihuicatl Alvarez Paine, known on the streets as “Big Mama” an alleged associate of the notorious Kamagasaki gang out of Little Tokyo, executing an arrest that quickly turned violent before it was over.

The operation was led under the authority of the Chief of the GTA Police Department, whose identity this publication is withholding at their request. Present on the ground were Officer Sampson, Officer Camila, and Corporal Shin whose hands-on involvement in the arrest would prove more literal than anyone anticipated.

ALVAREZ ARREST
By all accounts, Alvarez did not go gently. When officers made contact at the residence, the suspect resisted with enough force to turn a standard arrest into a full-blown brawl. The struggle was described as intense and close-quarters , the kind that leaves furniture rearranged and people bleeding.

Alvarez herself came out the worse for the encounter. The suspect sustained significant injuries during the altercation, a direct consequence officers say, of the level of resistance she chose to offer. She put up a real fight and it took quite a co-ordinated effort by the officers present to put her down.

Corporal Shin on scene was not left unscathed either. During the melee, the officer took a punch squarely to the face, an occupational hazard when dealing with GTO affiliated suspects who apparently have issues understanding the phrase “you’re under arrest, please comply.”

Injured but unbowed, the brave Corporal remained on duty and finished their shift.

LAWYERS, NURSES, AND THE MACHINERY OF THE LAW
Alvarez was then transported to PD HQ and processed without further incident.

Legal representation arrived swiftly in the form of Sephael DeVir, an attorney called in to defend the suspect in custody. DeVir made his presence known at the jail with the particular brand of urgency that defense lawyers reserve for clients who’ve just had a very bad evening.

With a client sporting visible injuries, DeVir wasted no time raising questions about the nature of those wounds, a familiar theme in this city, where the line between a legitimate use of force and outright brutality is rarely clean and almost always contested.

It is a unnecessary extra tension that the GTA Police Department knows all too well. Officers daily walk into volatile situations, meet resistance head-on, and do what the job demands, only to find themselves scrutinized in the aftermath by attorneys whose entire strategy hinges on making justified force look like something uglier. To be clear, in the course of this arrest Corporal Shin received an unjustifiable physical assault. The other officers present did not escalate the situation, they instead responded to the situation which was unfolding in a manner necessary to de-escalate, but in a city so raw, with a legal system this fractured, the court of public opinion rarely waits for the facts. DeVir knows that and so does the department.

Also attending to the suspect was Kaya, a nurse dispatched from MD, called in directly by the GTA PD following standard procedure for suspects requiring medical attention while in custody. The arresting officers ensured Alvarez received proper medical care before anything else moved forward. Whatever DeVir may argue about the arrest, the PD followed protocol to the letter once she was behind bars.

NOI ZHONG
As if one major arrest wasn’t enough for one evening, GTA PD wasn’t finished.

In a separate incident, while the exact timing and connection to the earlier arrest remains undisclosed at the time of this report, officers also brought in Noi Zhong, the alleged leader of the Kamagasaki gang, who already had an outstanding warrant in her name under the charge of brutally attacking and beating a woman in the streets.

The unfortunate victim, believed to be a sex worker, was assaulted by Zhong in what witnesses describe as a brazen, daylight attack. Whether this second arrest was coordinated with the Alvarez operation or simply the PD coincidentally making the most of an already active night is not entirely clear. What is clear though is that GTA PD managed to net two very significant arrests in the span of one shift.

A WORD ON THE DEPARTMENT
Say what you will about the state of this city and the role of our Police Department in that, and this publication has said plenty, but tonight the GTA PD showed those lurking in the shadows of criminality that they are now a force to be reckon with and that they mean business.

Facing obstacles in performing their duties such as physical assaults, violent suspects and the risk of being shot while reportedly operating without any meaningful support from the mayor’s office and with a district attorney’s office that exists mostly in name only who prefer to indulge in legal theatrics rather than dispensing justice, the Chief and the officers continue to selflessly do the hard work that needs to be done regardless of that lack of support .

IN CONCLUSION
GTA deserves better governance. Until it gets it, at least it now has a police department willing to risk their lives to do what needs to be done to keep our citizens safe.
